Just another frozen yogurt shop? 21 Choices begs to differ
Now, 21 Choices frozen yogurt isn’t new, but in this latest boom of froyo led by Pinkberry, it has certainly been eclipsed. Granted, it doesn’t serve the same kind of tart flavors on a regular basis as Pinkberry does, but it does win points in the creativity category. With rotating flavors like Malibu rum coconut and Animal cookie and the option of “mix-ins” a la Cold Stone Creamery, 21 Choices is a genius combination of frozen yogurt and ice cream and toppings and yummy, yummy goodness all in one retail storefront. And best of all, there’s one right by my office!
On my first visit to the University Village location across the street from USC, I had lemon cookie frozen yogurt with a graham cracker mixed in. It was a satisfying afternoon treat, with the graham cracker complimenting the lemon flavor well. I could have gotten any number of toppings or mix-ins (you’re given a choice) as there are tubs and tubs of all kinds of complements, including Twinkies and Reese’s peanut butter cups, but I went with the low-key graham cracker.
The second time I went, I got the Butterfinger flavor, which was basically chocolate frozen yogurt with pieces of Butterfinger already in it. But then I went ahead and ruined it by adding mini chocolate chips, which were overly sweet.
Prices start at $2.75 for a “tres small” size, which is not tres small at all and is actually a bit too much frozen yogurt for me. The downside is each topping/mix-in is an additional 95 cents, so your total can add up fast. But I think less is more…though I wouldn’t judge if you wanted to mix in some Ding Dongs and Kit Kats into your caramel latte frozen yogurt. Just sayin’.
omg. i grew up next to the 21 choices in oldtown pasadena (the line is always a pain in the neck, but worth it) and i LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. pink berry shminkberry. i like to get the vanilla with bananas, coconuts, and walnuts – it tastes like summmmerrrrrrr 🙂
I churn froyo at home. Come to papa.
Yes, your stuff is gooooood! We’ll have to do an official tasting of sorts, no?
