Maya Tulum Mexico resort offers laid-back luxury on the beach

I had been working too much. I needed a break. Like, a real break. No laptop, no phone, no email. I needed to disengage and just relax. Mexico sounded like a perfect getaway — warm, full of some of my favorite foods, and not too far away.

Then I came across Maya Tulum, a wellness resort in Tulum, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula. Situated right on the beautiful white sands of the Caribbean (in fact, all the rooms are more like huts with paths made of sand between all the buildings), Maya Tulum offers daily yoga classes, meditation sessions, spa treatments and healthy food to reset your mind and body. The lack of wifi is purposeful (you can find it in a couple of places if you really need it).

So of course I went. At first I was weary of the wellness mumbo jumbo, thinking I would be eating tasteless food while having to greet everyone with “namaste.” But Maya Tulum Mexico resort isn’t pretentious at all. The service is warm and inviting, and nothing is forced on you. It’s all very chill, which is the point. And the food definitely has flavor.

Location

Maya Tulum Mexico resort is located in the hotel zone, which is on the beach away from the town of Tulum. It’s not far from the northern end of the strip, which means you’re about only a 15-minute taxi ride from the Tulum ruins. The buildings have a low-slung campus feel, perfect for the gorgeous weather I experienced in January, and are right on the beach. In fact, I was able to practically stumble out of my room every day to the main beach, just steps away. This time of year was perfect to visit, too, as it wasn’t too hot and the beaches weren’t crowded with tourists. I spent a lot of time just lounging on one of the chaises or in a hammock.

Rooms

Most of the rooms at Maya Tulum Mexico resort are individual buildings fashioned with palapa-like palm roofs. The bathrooms are decorated with colorful tiles and supplied with organic bath products. The beds came with mosquito nets — yes, there are many mosquitoes, and unfortunately I’m a magnet — a requisite for the jungle. Though the beds look simple, I found them very comfortable.

Dining

The resort has a restaurant with a stunning view of the water. Breakfast is included in your stay, and the rotating buffet selections kept me interested over the three mornings we were there. The chilaquiles were delicious, and I really liked having fresh local fruit and jams (passion fruit!) available. You can grab hot ginger tea all day long here, too.

My husband and I also had dinner here one night, serenaded by an awesome live band. The drink menu featured cocktails and fresh juices. I went with a mezcalito made with smokey mezcal (which I prefer to tequilla), pineapple, cilantro and jalapeno, as well as a savory juice made with celery, cucumber, lemon and ginger. Both were on point. Our guacamole and pico de gallo starter with cheese was a tasty start to our entrees: fish over a bed of granola and sweet potato topped with sauteed kale, and shrimp risotto with huitlacoche. I preferred the fish to the risotto, but I just don’t think I’m a big huitlacoche fan. But it was fun to try!

Spa

Because I got so many bug bites, I chose a Mayan clay massage. The clay pulls toxins out of the body and accelerates the healing process, which I found to be true — enough so that I bought a jar of clay to take home! The massage itself took place in its own hut. The masseuse rubbed that clay all over — even into my scalp and my hair — before I washed off and received more massage. It was a unique experience.

Wellness

In addition to spa treatments, Maya Tulum Mexico resort offers daily yoga classes, other sessions such as guided meditation, and on certain days of the week there are sweat lodge events in the on-site temezcal. There are also yoga retreats held here, so check in with the hotel if you’re interested.
