Travelogue: Midtown Atlanta Part 1
First thing’s first: Congratulations to my fiance and sometime ShopEatSleep contributor Rory for a successful world premiere of “Toxic Soup” at the Atlanta Film Festival! I spent barely two days in Atlanta’s Midtown area experiencing my first film festival, Rory’s screening, and my first time to the city of Atlanta. And thanks to some great recommendations from an Atlanta resident, I had some good eats, too (more on that later — stay tuned for Part 2).
I stayed at the Georgian Terrace Hotel. All the common areas were very nicely done, including the facade, restaurant patio and lobby. Our room’s decor could have used a face lift, especially the bathroom’s fixtures, but that’s more to match the aesthetic of the rest of the hotel than anything since it all worked fine. The room itself was huge — we had a suite with two queen-size beds, a full kitchen, and washer and dryer — all for the film festival promotional rate of $89 per night (it would have been $110 without the discount). The room was clean, and the beds were comfortable. And there was free Wi-Fi available throughout the hotel.
I do have some quibbles, though. There were no plates, cups or utensils in the kitchen. These were available for rent for $25, but seriously? There were also very few toiletries in the bathroom — the only ones available were two soaps and a bottle of lotion. No shampoo, conditioner or shower cap, which are pretty standard.
While the room was fine for the two nights I stayed here, if I were staying here longer I would have had a problem with the lack of in-room amenities. However, the service was great — when I needed a cab to take me to the airport, the valets got me one immediately. And while there was some confusion over the promotional room rate, it was all worked out with courteous service.
I’ve used that type of soap before. It was weird.
