First impressions: Bottega Louie

img_1019

I’ve heard a lot of hype about Bottega Louie, mostly that it’s fabulous. So when I finally made it over to the restaurant/market/deli/patisserie in downtown L.A. over the weekend, I was expecting a lot. Having those high expectations may have been the wrong way to start the visit, but that’s what happens when there’s a lot of hype!

Sliders at Rowdy Red Wine & Burger Bar

The folks over at Rowdy Red Wine & Burger Bar invited a group of food bloggers (many of the foodies in my blogroll, and then some) to have dinner with its newly introduced wine, which was added to the menu a couple of weeks ago and finally made the restaurant’s name make sense. Rowdy Red, which is named after a type of heirloom tomato, is located in the underground food court of City National Plaza in downtown L.A. Patina update

Here’s Patina’s official statement regarding its move to the AT&T Center downtown, as first reported by the Los Angeles Times via EaterLA:

“Patina Restaurant Group (PRG) is excited to announce its upcoming move to downtown Los Angeles’ AT&T Center. The long-planned move will occur sometime before the end of 2009. PRG looks forward to its move into 30,000 square feet of new space that includes a central catering kitchen, corporate offices, storage and a future restaurant currently in its initial planning stage. In addition, PRG will provide a Market Café to service the building.

Restaurant openings

Just opened:

  • Tavern From Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (AOC, Lucques, Hungry Cat) comes the ladies’ newest creation, a restaurant/lounge/marketplace, in Brentwood. Yes, it did open today. I called.
  • Pourtal A high-tech wine bar in Santa Monica, Pourtal offers wine via preloaded punch cards and electronic dispensers. Fancy.

To open in the near future:

  • Trader Vic’s The Beverly Hills institution moves downtown to L.A. Live. Scheduled to open Saturday, May 2.
  • La Grande Orange Cafe The Santa Monica location is scheduled to open May 7. Food being tested and staff being trained, according to tweets from @LaGrandeOrange. Pizza will be added to the menu at the new location, with Pasadena getting pizza some time this fall.
  • Playhouse and Sweet Love Hangover The nightclub/24-hour restaurant taking over the Fox Theater space on Hollywood Boulevard is now slated to open June 11. We’ll see. This is like the third or fourth time the opening date has been pushed back.

Free (and discounted) food

In addition to the free froyo at Red Mango I wrote about yesterday and the 31-cent scoops at Baskin Robbins I tweeted about, here are a few more deals and steals:

  • Magnolia, both the new downtown and original Hollywood locations, are offering 20% off your dinner bill through May 5 when you book a reservation. Looks like it’s a Daily Candy thing, so make sure to mention and/or bring in your DC email. Also, your dinner party is capped at 6 for this deal.
  • From Friday through Tuesday (May 1-5), Provecho downtown is having a crazy-extended happy hour each day from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with $5 Cazadores margaritas, $3 Dos Equis and Tecate, $2 mezcal shots and $5 tacos. On Cinco de Mayo, the resto will also have burlesque dancers, luchadores and a mariachi band. From Thrillist.
  • To kick off American Craft Beer Week (May 11-17), Brix 42 in Pasadena is offering $3 beers all that week AND giving one free entree per person on May 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The gastropub will also be holding an all-night happy hour on Tuesday, May 12.
