Georgio’s Cucina: From New York chef Gary Robins and Chris Heyman, restaurateur behind Table 8 and 8 oz. Burger Bar, comes a Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes dinner at this new Studio City restaurant. The 7-course prix fixe ($65 per person, with a $45 wine pairing supplement; $15 children’s menu also available) will feature oysters on the half shell with prosecco gelée and black caviar, giant shrimp, big eye tuna, clams with pancetta, lobster risotto, roasted branzino and a selection of desserts.

Eva Restaurant: For a family-style dinner, hit up Eva’s prix fixe ($39 per person) on Christmas Eve to enjoy a prime rib roast, roasted organic chicken, creamed spinach, butterscotch pudding and more. Given the high quality of the food here, this meal looks like one of the best deals out there!

Gladstones Malibu: Looking for somewhere to nosh during the day? This SBE takeover is offering a Christmas Eve Dungeness crab feast ($70 per person; $30 for children 12 and younger) from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. You’ll also get Caesar salad, boiled new potatoes, steamed corn, asparagus and eggnog golden raisin brioche bread pudding. There’s fun for the whole family, too — new hopscotch courses and a sandbox, as well as a coloring contest for a chance to win special holiday treats.

Whist at Viceroy Hotel: Can’t decide which day to eat out? No worries because Whist is offering its Christmas menu ($75 per person) on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You’ll start out with a smoked sturgeon salad with the option to add on foie gras torchon or raw oysters, and for the main course, choose two whole roasted meats, including a pork rack, organic turkey, prime rib and wild European turbot. There will be all kinds of sides, too, including black truffle, chestnut and pancetta risotto, and ricotta and spinach lasagna, in addition to a variety of desserts — even roasted chestnuts in a brown paper bag to go.

Oliverio at Avalon Hotel: Chef Mirko Paderno (a bit of a character, if you’ve ever met him) will be serving up some of his family’s Italian traditions on Christmas Day this year ($48 per person). These include marinated salmon in pink peppercorns with a citrus salad, a cauliflower soufflé topped with parmesan sauce, tonnarelli pasta made with crabmeat broth, and veal cheese and truffle fondue ravioli.

What kind of food and wine event makes you say, “Camels, zebras and buffalo, oh my!” upon pulling up to its venue? Los Angeles magazine’s The Food Event, that’s what kind. No, these animals weren’t on the menu but were residents on Saddlerock Ranch, home to Malibu Family Wines, where the eating and drinking festival was held.

This was my first time at The Food Event, which I thought was ambitiously named but pretty much lived up to it. The venue — nestled in the Malibu hills among vineyards — was beautiful, even on that gray and rainy day, and the food and drink were excellent. It wasn’t too crowded, either, which made the experience much more enjoyable (the weather may have had something to do with it).

Here were my favorite tastes and moments from that day.

Sweetsalt Food Shop‘s duck confit slider with lavender butter. Yes, yes and yes.

Sweetsalt Food Shop's duck confit with lavender butter

Eva Restaurant offered a light and frothy mushroom soup, with truffles available for those with thick wallets. I went truffle-less.

Eva Chef Mark Gold dressed in ranch-appropriate gear

Public Kitchen & Bar’s (formerly Dakota at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel) braised veal cheeks with fingerling potatoes and watermelon radishes was delicious, and I don’t even like veal. The meat was ridiculously tender, and the radishes gave the dish a nice tangy touch.

Public Kitchen's braised veal cheeks

Café Habana‘s roasted corn covered in cheese and other goodness was also delicious, though it was sweeter than I expected.

Cafe Habana's roasted corn with cheese

My favorite drinks from the day were this dark brew from Craftsman Brewing Company in Pasadena, the chardonnay from Saddlerock and the Semler cabernet sauvignon (both of those wines are produced by Malibu Family Wines).

Craftsman beer

Saddlerock chardonnay

Bulgarini Gelato and Magnolia Bakery‘s banana pudding were dessert highlights. Bulgarini’s pistachio and almond flavors were my favorites, though the yogurt with olive oil drizzled on top was interesting. Magnolia’s banana pudding was tops, though — it was almost trifle-like, with vanilla wafers mixed in.

Bulgarini gelato: pistachio (bottom), yogurt with olive oil (top)

Magnolia's banana pudding, vanilla cupcake, and cranberry chocolate chunk cookie

And here are the animals!

Whether you plan on celebrating Valentine’s Day or not — or just haven’t made up your mind yet — here are some special meals that will be happening around Los Angeles.

To Celebrate

Drago Centro: From Feb. 12 to 14, Drago Centro is offering a four-course dinner for $55, with wine pairings for an additional $35. (Limited à la carte menu items will be available, too.) Here are the menu choices:

First course — beef carpaccio, hearts of palm and candied almonds, or antipasto plate

Second course — butternut squash ravioli with lemon brown butter, or shrimp and scallop agnolotti with cioppino foam

Third course — roasted lamb with artichoke hearts, brown butter pomme purée and rapini, or Dover sole, baby vegetable ragoût and lemon beurre blanc

Fourth course — strawberry semifreddo with basil and white chocolate, or chocolate cake, candied Marcona almonds and raspberries

Also, on Feb. 14 the restaurant will be hosting a masquerade carnival with live music, and guests are encouraged to dress up, too.

Cecconi’s: The West Hollywood eatery is offering its full à la carte menu, a tasting menu for $85, and an optional wine pairing for an additional $45. The tasting menu includes wild mushroom cappuccino; dungeness crab, ahi tuna and avocado; winter black truffle and ricotta ravioli; chateaubriand for two, winter root vegetables and a peppercorn sauce; and a layered chocolate cake, kirsh cherries and whipped cream.

Pourtal: The Santa Monica wine bar is offering two-for-one glasses of bubbly on Feb. 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Choose from the featured selection of Marquis de Perlade Blanc de Blanc or a Kir Royale. Cupid will be there to pass out secret Valentines to guests who purchase bubbly or a tasting card; they will receive a free pour ranging from on Pourtal’s Enomatic machines.

Cube: Head over to Cube Marketplace’s cafe on Feb. 13 for a fondue party. Ok, not really, but you can get the fondue special and make it your own party! For $35, you can get prosecco, cheese fondue, roasted farmers market vegetables and fresh fruit, house-baked bread, Meyer lemon coeur a la crème, farmers market berries, citrus cookies — and house-made dark chocolate truffles and confections to take home.

Not To Celebrate

Charlie’s Malibu: On Feb. 13, Charlie’s will host “Bitter, Party of 1” for singles (or as its press release says, “couples welcome, but we may mock them”) with tunes from DJ Kid Wycked from 9:00 p.m. to close. And on both Feb. 13 and 14, the restaurant will offer a four-course chef’s tasting menu for $75, with a $20 wine pairing, along with the regular à la carte and lounge menus. The tasting menu includes dishes such as poached pear with herbed goat cheese and candied walnuts, filet mignon, and lobster tail. You don’t have to eat with a Valentine, you know.

Rush Street: On Feb. 13, the Culver City bar and restaurant will host a Meet Your Valentine party with specialty cocktails and artisanal chocolates. There will be no prix fixe menu. On Feb. 14, diners can enjoy half-off featured wine and champagne all day long.

Akasha: Take home a box of 12 mini cupcakes for $20 from the Culver City restaurant’s bakery to serve at your anti-Vday party — or eat them yourself, I don’t judge. Flavors include chocolate and vanilla cakes with different frosting and icing. The chocolate with Gianduja (that’s a chocolate/hazelnut combo) filling, chocolate glaze and fleur de sel sounds awesome!

The best part is you don’t have to actually trek to Malibu to taste the wines because Pourtal will have them all in one place for you. Even better? A free launch party tomorrow night, Jan. 6, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., to kick off the tour. Admission is free, but you do have to buy a $15 tasting card, which gives you access to all 10 of the featured Malibu wines and additional hand pourings from off-list wines by representatives of the wineries (there will also be free appetizers).

Here’s the list of the 10 wines that will be available any time for a “tour” throughout January, as well as during the launch party:

2006 Hoyt Family Vineyards Chardonnay
2008 Republic of Malibu Pink Lady Rosé
2007 Cielo Malibu Rouge
2001 Semler Cabernet Sauvignon Library Release
2005 Semler Syrah
2005 Rosenthal Malibu Newton Canyon Merlot
2004 Rosenthal Surfrider Red
2007 Griffin Family Vineyard Malbec
2007 Malibu Vineyards “Vortex” Sangiovese
2008 Malibu Sanity Pinot Noir, Schetter Malibu Vineyard

Here’s the schedule of additional hand-poured tastings from individual wineries:

Jan. 13, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Semler and Saddlerock
Jan. 20, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Cielo
Jan. 21, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Rosenthal
Jan. 27, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Hoyt and Malibu Sanity
Jan. 28, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Malibu Vineyards and Griffin Family Vineyards

I’m not a big wine drinker, but I’ve had the Semler Cabernet Sauvignon (I can’t remember the exact year), and it was amazing. So $15 for access to 10+ Malibu wines sounds like a great deal.

This is the first post by filmmaker (and my boyfriend!) Rory Delaney. This video was shot and edited by him.

If you’re like me, you’re always on the lookout for cheap excursions in LA. And since I’m a beach guy and a dog guy, a combo of the two packs the perfect punch. Unfortunately, LA city officials couldn’t agree less and forbade dogs from Santa Monica Beach all the way down to Redondo. (If you have a rebellious streak and press your luck, know that if you and your pooch get busted it’s punishable by a $600 fine). And while there are official dog beaches in Long Beach and Huntington Beach — Maya and I used to frequent Huntington’s Bark Beach when we lived in Anaheim once upon a time — the last thing I want to spend my free time doing is battling Orange County traffic with two revved-up pugs on my lap kicking my bladder repeatedly.

So I started taking Sushi and Zelmo to Malibu. And though you can still get stuck in traffic on PCH, at least you can stare out at an ocean view instead of an industrial panorama of Downey or the Wilmington oil refinery. The first beach I took them to in Malibu was El Matador Beach, a relatively secluded spot on the northern end of town past Pepperdine University. And while technically El Matador also forbids dogs, there have been several other pooches roaming free whenever I’ve chilled there. The catch with El Matador is you have to walk down a series of steep stairs to get to the water so if your dog is spooked by declines, beware. But when you do finally get down to the beach your reward is a bunch of cool rock formations and miniature caves where your dog can explore with little risk of any surprise police encounters. However, if you do get busted, don’t come to me looking for six hundred bones because I’m pleading the 5th.
