<p>The 24th Annual Great Chefs of Los Angeles event at CBS Studio Center in Studio City was good times. The &#8220;Go Green, Go Organic&#8221; event benefited the <a href="http://www.kidney.org/site/index.cfm?ch=504" target="_blank">National Kidney Foundation</a> through a fancy-schmancy auction that was too rich for my blood. Good thing I had tasty food to keep me occupied. While there were some repeat participants from <a href="http://shopeatsleep.com/2009/11/10/so-much-food-under-the-sun-great-chefs-of-los-angeles/" target="_self">last year&#8217;s event</a>, I managed to find some new favorites this time &#8217;round.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.dragocentro.com/" target="_blank">Drago Centro</a>&#8216;s Sommelier and Beverage Director Michael Shearin served up mini Smitten With Britain cocktails of Tanqueray gin, fever tree tonic, and fresh chives and lime. The drink was nice and light yet had a nice kick. Chef de Cuisine Ian Gresik served up an interesting celery root panna cotta topped with pancetta and a basil crouton. I&#8217;ve never had a savory panna cotta before, so this was definitely intriguing.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div id="attachment_4025" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 501px"><a href="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_38001.jpg"><img class="size-large wp-image-4025 " title="IMG_3800" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_38001-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="491" height="369" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Drago Centro&#39;s Smitten With Britain cocktail</p></div>
<p><span id="more-4000"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.lagosantamonica.com/" target="_blank">Locando del Lago</a> in Santa Monica brought all kinds of deliciousness to the Valley that day. Braised beef bone marrow with a saffron risotto cake and mustard greens? Yes, please. How about burrata with housemade pink lady apple gelato and prosciutto? Yes, yes and yes.</p>
<div id="attachment_4029" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 501px"><a href="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_3804.jpg"><img class="size-large wp-image-4029 " title="IMG_3804" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_3804-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="491" height="369" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Lago&#39;s braised bone marrow</p></div>
<div id="attachment_4030" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 379px"><a href="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_3803.jpg"><img class="size-large wp-image-4030 " title="IMG_3803" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_3803-768x1024.jpg" alt="" width="369" height="491" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Lago&#39;s burrata, apple gelato and prosciutto</p></div>
<p><a href="http://www.harrysbbq.com/" target="_blank">Harry’s Oklahoma Style Smokehouse BBQ</a> served up some comforting peach cobbler, which was perfect on that cloudy day. So perfect, in fact, that a complete stranger bullied me into giving him some of my portion, which happened to be the last. Who does that? Someone who recognizes the peachy goodness of soul food, that&#8217;s who. (It was weird, no doubt.)</p>
<div id="attachment_4031" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 501px"><a href="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_3813.jpg"><img class="size-large wp-image-4031 " title="IMG_3813" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_3813-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="491" height="369" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Harry’s Oklahoma Style Smokehouse BBQ&#39;s peach cobbler</p></div>
<p><a href="http://stefansatlafarm.com/" target="_blank">Stefan&#8217;s at L.A. Farm</a> probably offered up the most complicated bite of the day &#8212; ice cream lollipops made by alternately dipping pineapple chunks in passion fruit puree and vanilla ice cream, with a dip in liquid nitrogen in between. I only got a quick taste of someone else&#8217;s pop because the man in this photo gave mine away to couple of girls he apparently thought were cuter than me, even though I was clearly waiting for one. Boo! Oh well, the lollipops were a cool idea anyway. Next year, I plan to shame him into giving me more than one of whatever he&#8217;s making to make up for this offense!</p>

I need to have some on me at all times. If I find myself without it, I have a mini freak out. So when I discovered <a href="http://www.laroccaskincare.com/index.html" target="_blank">LaROCCA</a>&#8216;s <a href="http://www.laroccaskincare.com/products/lip_balm.html" target="_blank">Lip Shield Multi-Active Lip Balm</a> ($16), which was included in the <a href="http://shopeatsleep.com/2009/11/10/so-much-food-under-the-sun-great-chefs-of-los-angeles/" target="_self">Great Chefs of Los Angeles</a> event gift bag, I rejoiced. Sure, it claims to have all kinds of amino acids, antioxidants and antimicrobials, but the bottom line is this stuff keeps your lips nice and comfy for hours. No having to reapply constantly, even after eating and drinking &#8212; lips still stay moist.</p>
<p>There are all kinds of fancy-sounding ingredients listed on LaROCCA&#8217;s Web site for the lip balm, including colloidal gold, but the one ingredient I actually know a little about, hyaluronic acid, is what keeps lips&#8217; moisture so well. It is also what makes your lips look so smooth and plump, which is an effect of this lip balm. There&#8217;s also SPF 8 in it, so you get a little sun protection, too.</p>

<p>I spent yesterday afternoon on the CBS lot in Studio City, eating and drinking my way through more than 30 of Los Angeles&#8217; chefs&#8217; food at the 23rd annual Great Chefs of Los Angeles event, which benefited the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. OK, I didn&#8217;t taste everything &#8212; I&#8217;m not a black hole of food &#8212; but I did taste a lot of good stuff.</p>
<p><span id="more-1738"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.blvd16.com/" target="_blank">BLVD 16</a>&#8216;s Simon Dolinky made butternut squash dumplings with mustard greens, pomegranate and brown butter. I like the food at BLVD 16 at the Hotel Palomar, so it&#8217;s no wonder that I enjoyed this dish, too. Topped with bacon bits, the crunchiness contrasted well with the doughy dumplings, and the greens were flavorful without being overpowering.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1742" title="img_2121" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2121-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2121" width="225" height="300" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.akasharestaurant.com/" target="_blank">Akasha</a>&#8216;s short rib on pretzel bread with a side of cole slaw and pickle. The pretzel bread (I love pretzel bread!) soaked up the short rib&#8217;s tasty juices, making it all even better. The slaw had a spicy kick to it, and wasn&#8217;t creamy, which I prefer.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1743" title="img_2122" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2122-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2122" width="225" height="300" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.bonadeadrinks.com/" target="_blank">Bonadea</a>, a Los Angeles-based company that makes bottled aguas frescas. I tried the jamaica flavor, which has nothing to do with the island country and everything to do with hibiscus. Its flavor was light, and a little sweet and a little tart. There was also a tamarind flavor, which I initially passed on because I don&#8217;t like tamarind, but after tasting a sip, I found it more peachy than tamarindy. Yeah, that&#8217;s not a word.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1744" title="img_2127" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2127-300x225.jpg" alt="img_2127" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<p>Neal Fraser of <a href="http://www.gracerestaurant.com/" target="_blank">Grace</a> and <a href="http://www.bldrestaurant.com/" target="_blank">BLD</a> fame made braised veal short rib with polenta that tasted just like a Chinese dish my mom makes. That&#8217;s because the polenta was cooked with chestnuts &#8212; yum!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1745" title="img_2136" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2136-300x225.jpg" alt="img_2136" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.bottegalouie.com/" target="_blank">Bottega Louie</a>&#8216;s panini with brie, blood orange and watercress, and a salad with roasted grape tomatoes, burata and pesto were light and refreshing, which was welcome since a lot of what was being offered at the event was heavy as this is technically fall.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1746" title="img_2145" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2145-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2145" width="225" height="300" /></p>
<p>Celestino Drago&#8217;s duck sandwich and butternut squash soup were also good, though I liked the sandwich more than the soup, which I didn&#8217;t find all that impressive.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1747" title="img_2148" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2148-300x225.jpg" alt="img_2148" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.fordsfillingstation.net/" target="_blank">Ford&#8217;s Filling Station</a>&#8216;s Ben Ford made a persimmon salad with goat cheese, candied pecans and a sherry vinaigrette. Beautiful and tasty. I&#8217;m obsessed with persimmons, and I wanted to ask Ford for a plate of just fruit, but that probably wouldn&#8217;t have gone over well.</p>
<div id="attachment_1748" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 235px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-1748" title="img_2151" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2151-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2151" width="225" height="300" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Chef Ben Ford mixing up some salad</p></div>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1749" title="img_2153" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2153-300x225.jpg" alt="img_2153" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<p>Yes, the <a href="http://www.thebazaar.com/" target="_blank">Bazaar</a> of the SLS Hotel was there, and yes, it served some pretty and fun stuff, including the liquid nitrogen-frozen caipirinha. It was really, really strong, but eating it with that sage on top was pretty amazing.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1750" title="img_2164" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2164-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2164" width="225" height="300" /></p>
<p>Keven Alan Lee&#8217;s <a href="http://east-hollywood.com/" target="_blank">East</a> served up a scallop on the half shell with lemongrass sambal, wasabi creme fraiche, shiso dust and micro cilantro, as well as Hawaiian walu fish with miso mustard cream, micro wasabi, chive essence and smoked chardonnay sea salt. Many people liked this, especially the scallop, and I did too, but probably not as much as everyone else.</p>
<div id="attachment_1751" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 235px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-1751" title="img_2170" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2170-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2170" width="225" height="300" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Scallops on the half shell</p></div>
<div id="attachment_1752" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 235px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-1752" title="img_2169" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2169-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2169" width="225" height="300" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Hawaiian walu</p></div>
<p>Michael Fiorelli of <a href="http://www.terranea.com/california-fine-dining-marsel.php" target="_blank">Mar&#8217;Sel</a> at Terranea Resort made braised wagyu beef cheek and creamed chard tortellini with ricotta and tiny autumn vegetables. The tortellini I could take or leave, but the beef was wonderfully tender, and the mini veggies were so cute &#8212; perfectly cooked, too.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1753" title="img_2174" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2174-225x300.jpg" alt="img_2174" width="225" height="300" /></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1754" title="img_2176" src="http://shopeatsleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_2176-300x225.jpg" alt="img_2176" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<p>And now for something completely different&#8230;I give you <a href="http://www.sushipopper.com/" target="_blank">Sushi Popper</a>! Is it sushi? Is it a push-up? Is it a sushi push-up? It is! I tried the seared albacore with smoked banana and a mild habanero sauce. It wasn&#8217;t awful, but it wasn&#8217;t good.</p>

<p>All in all, this was a really enjoyable event, despite the hot sun. I do have a gripe, though: The event&#8217;s theme was &#8220;Go Green, Go Organic,&#8221; yet there were all kinds of green violations. Sure, everyone used eco-friendly plates and utensils, but what&#8217;s with the bottled water? And the plastic cups? And the unnecessary packaging of the Sushi Poppers? Something to think about for next year&#8230;</p>

To celebrate the coming of this weekend, here are some events to consider:</p>
<p><strong>Friday</strong>: <a href="http://www.seatbeltbags.com/" target="_blank">Harveys</a>, purveyors of fancy seat belt hand bags, is <a href="http://shopeatsleep.com/2009/09/15/bags-beer-and-art-harveys-open-canvas-event/" target="_self">continuing its search</a> for the most arty of designs to feature in its Melrose Avenue store and to feature on one of its bags. From 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., stop by the store to help narrow the entries down from 10 to three. Hot dogs, party punch and raffles will sustain you through what promises to be an arduous voting process.</p>
<p><strong>Saturday</strong>: <a href="http://dogpetboutique.com/dogwesthollywood.php" target="_blank">D.O.G. pet boutique</a> on La Cienega in West Hollywood is hosting a custom jewelry event for your furry friends. Bring you four-legged friend to the Bling Your Bitch event (not the best name, I know) between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to check out the myriad charms, crystals and pearls available to create your own doggie jewelry, which can be coordinated to some you make for yourself, too. Prices start at $12 for the Gems4Paws-designed bling. Oh, and there&#8217;s champagne!<br />
<strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Sunday</strong>: The 23rd Annual <a href="http://www.facebook.com/greatchefsofla" target="_blank">Great Chefs of Los Angeles</a> is themed &#8220;Go Green, Go Organic&#8221; and will feature more than 30 L.A.-area chefs and their food, including the Dragos, Benjamin Ford, Mary Sue Milliken, Susan Feniger, Neal Fraser and Akasha Richmond. Enjoy all the food and alcohol you can handle from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at CBS Studio Center in Studio City. There will also be auctions to benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. Tickets are $150, but you can get them for $75 through <a href="https://www.goldstar.com/join?p=F1135976RP" target="_blank">Goldstar</a>.</p>
<p>And if you haven&#8217;t had enough, stop by <a href="http://www.facebook.com/stinkers.truckstop" target="_blank">Stinkers Truck Stop</a>&#8216;s one-year anniversary party. The oh-so-ironic Silver Lake bar will be having drink specials, a DJ and swag giveaways from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Because you need to close out the weekend right.</p>
